Alycia Meriweather: Educating Detroit’s Future Leaders with Dignity and Heart

Born: Approximately 1974 in Detroit, Michigan
Detroit Era: Lifelong
Legacy: Teacher, administrator, and advocate for equity in public education.

Introduction

A proud native Detroiter, Alycia Meriweather has deep roots in the city’s public education system, a former student and graduate of the city’s schools, who later earned an education degree from the University of Michigan.

Held in high esteem for her steady leadership and relentless focus on student success as a teacher, curriculum leader, and district administrator, her mission has always been clear: to restore trust, reform education, and always put the needs of students first.

From Classroom to Command Force

Alycia began her career in the Detroit Public School system as a science teacher before transitioning into district management, where she worked front and center in the Office of Curriculum and the Office of Science Education, as well as directing the Detroit Mathematics & Science Center.

It was a position that allowed her to gain a deeper understanding of how policy, community, and teaching intersect, which enabled her to easily bridge the gap between the classroom and politics.

Superintendent of the People

In March 2016, Alycia received the honor of becoming the Interim Superintendent of Detroit Public Schools.

It was a time when the district was in a major transitional period, and she immediately got to work improving policy transparency, stabilizing operations, and fostering better relationships between educators, local families, and community stakeholders.

Regardless of the fact that her role was only temporary until the district chose a permanent superintendent, she still won much respect for how she held herself, becoming known as a leader who was both approachable and consistent.

The Ongoing Legacy of an Academic Leader

Today, Alycia Meriweather is proud to hold the title of Deputy Superintendent for External Partnerships & Innovation for Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD).

She has also played a major role in responding to the unique challenges that came with the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as the district’s ongoing fight to promote literacy reform and equitable funding across DPSCD schools.

She’s not just an educator, advocate, and mentor.

She’s Detroit’s model of academic hope: one grounded in community, reform, and securing a brighter future for all children regardless of their income level.
