Erika Erickson: Detroit’s Reporter That Fell and Rose again

Born: Unknown
Detroit Era: Ongoing
Legacy: Broadcast journalist and survivor.

Introduction

Erika Erickson is a native of Canton Township who graduated from Wayne State University before transitioning into broadcast journalism at WJBK-Fox 2, where she covered everything from breaking news to groundbreaking human-interest stories.

Her reporting is empathetic, human, and deeply rooted in her own lived experiences, which provide her with a degree of empathy she carries with her into all the stories she reports on.

Fall, Rise, and Return

Erickson stepped away from broadcasting in 2021 due to a combination of complex health issues related to her nervous system.

During that period, she worked mostly outside of journalism while prioritizing her recovery, including positions in communications at
Henry Ford Health and the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.

In October 2024, Erika Erickson returned to air as a reporter for WDIV Local 4 News and in November of that same year she joined the Local 4 team right on the heels of her 8-year anniversary since departing at Fox 2.

In short: Erika Erickson’s career is that of a phoenix that falls just to rise again.

Her struggle through illness, healing, and taking back her power provides her with a unique perspective and has allowed her to reassess just how much she values her broadcasting career and her overall connection to the city she serves.

She is living proof that a return can sometimes be even more powerful than a downfall: a grounded, dignified, powerful presence Detroit’s local news community is lucky to have onboard.
