Born: Detroit, Michigan
Detroit Era: Ongoing
Legacy: Broadcast journalist, founder, and community leader.

Introduction

Beloved Detroit WDIV-Local 4 anchor Rhonda Walker was born in Detroit and spent a large part of her youth in Lansing before going on to earn a degree in Communications from Michigan State University.

From there, she got her start in journalism as an anchor for WJBK-Fox 2 Detroit before continuing on to WDIV-Local 4 in 2003, a position she still holds today.

Television and Local Presence

As co-anchor of Detroit’s morning news for over two decades, as well as a noon news anchor and health reporter, Walker is best known for her vibrant energy, consistency, and deep personal connection to her audience.

Her work ethic and positive community impact have garnered her multiple awards over the years, including the National Daily Point of Light Award and the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service.

As far as her work outside of television, she is deeply involved in local community upliftment efforts, mentorship, and civic programs, making regular public appearances in support of various causes across Metro Detroit.

The Rhonda Walker Foundation

In 2003, Walker founded the Rhonda Walker Foundation, of which she is also the president, a foundation that works to empower inner-city girls by providing them with mentorship and college-prep opportunities.

Under Rhonda’s guidance, the program proudly boasts a 100% high school graduation rate as well as a 95% college enrollment rate among all the girls that participate in the program.

The foundation has allowed Rhonda to use her broadcasting platform as an avenue to open doors for young women in her hometown, providing them with the confidence and skillset they need to help create a brighter future for themselves and their families.

Lasting Impact of One of Detroit’s Most Beloved Anchors

Rhonda Walker is so much more than just another Detroit morning news anchor.

She’s a model of hope, Black excellence, and possibility.
Her dual role on camera and in the community makes her an important figure in Detroit’s transformation—one who is both committed and deeply rooted in the city she serves.
