Detroit Architects: Schowalter Bros

Detroit Architects: Schowalter Bros

1 min read

Schowalter Bros was an early 20th century Detroit architectural design and building firm closely associated with the growth and affluence of Detroit’s top residential districts during the city’s peak industrial expansion years.

Their work typically featured Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival styles, which continue to be the aesthetic defining Sherwood Forest and neighboring historic districts today.

At its height, Schowalter Bros focused on homes that conveyed prestige and influence through quality craftsmanship and proportion rather than gaudiness.

Their projects had a major impact on Sherwood Forest’s lasting identity as a neighborhood of sophisticated architecture, with their properties at 19575 Stratford Road and 19585 Stratford Road demonstrating their hallmark brick and stone masonry, steeply pitched roofs, refined revival detailing, and comfortable interiors designed for entertaining, everyday life, and understated elegance.

Their work helped establish Sherwood Forest as one of Detroit’s most desirable communities – a reputation that has carried on into the modern day thanks to skilled architects, designers, and builders like the Schowalter Brothers who understood how to create neighborhoods built to last.
