About Southwest Detroit
There is an exciting buzz happening in urban Southwest Detroit. The neighborhood has long been known for its vibrant atmosphere and bustling profusion of bodegas, nightclubs and eateries. “Southwest Detroit has a lot going for it. It’s home to historically good housing stock and trendy businesses — and it’s a very walkable community,” says Nick Kramer, a Realtor with O’Connor Real Estate in Detroit. “It’s close to the Michigan Central Station development, which is opening in June 2024 and will change the city’s map.” The 15-story train station has been vacant since 1988. In 2018, Ford Motor purchased the beaux-arts structure and has completely transformed it into a technology campus and public spaces filled with restaurants, retail, bars and coffee shops. Southwest Detroit borders the small Mexicantown neighborhood. The communities have shared a cultural heritage since the 1920s, when immigrants from Mexico came to Detroit seeking better jobs and religious freedom. “Southwest Detroit’s Mexican and Latino community is very family-centered,” notes Kramer. That influence is seen in the neighborhood’s bright wall murals honoring early immigrants and family-owned restaurants. Housing
