Elmwood Park is a small but diverse community just east of downtown Detroit. While it’s often lumped with its neighbor to the west, Lafayette Park, this neighborhood stands out as a less expensive alternative. “When people are priced out of Lafayette Park, they move across the street to something a little more affordable but offers the same amenities,” says Jim Hall, a realtor with Simon & Associates Real Estate who has lived in Elmwood Park for over 40 years. While there aren’t as many high-rises as Lafayette Park, Elmwood Park features more co-ops, condos and townhouses housing people from all walks of life. It also offers a prime location and is home to some of the highest-regarded public schools in the city. “It’s a very stable community with access to nearly every amenity you can imagine,” says Hall. “When it was developed, the city made a commitment to include a mixture of homes for middle-income folks.
