About Martin Park
Once called home by the “Empress of Soul,” Martin Park is now a suburban neighborhood known for its well-maintained homes and its Catholic university—the largest in the state. On La Salle Avenue, the Gladys Knight House, where the soul legend herself once lived, is now a historic site that attracts fans far and wide. Between Fairfield Street and Livernois, the University of Detroit Mercy campus occupies a large swath of Martin Park. Besides this historic landmark and highly regarded Catholic university, Martin Park offers residents space from the lively atmosphere of downtown Detroit while sitting no more than eight miles from the city’s epicenter. Built mostly in the early 20th century, homes in Martin Park commonly come with brick exteriors and covered porches but range in style. Prairie-style homes with low-pitched roofs sit alongside Tudors with sharp roof lines and Colonial-style two-story homes. The median lot size is little more than a tenth of an acre, though driveways are standard throughout the neighborhood. Two-story Colonial homes needing significant repair can sell for less than $20,000, while a fully renovated, more modern Colonial home can sell for $200,000. A
