About Conant Gardens

Nine miles northeast of downtown Detroit, the Conant Gardens Historic District is a revitalizing bedroom community near major roadways like Interstate 75 and Nevada Avenue. Once the most exclusive African-American area in the city, the historically Black neighborhood was carved from land that belonged to abolitionist Shubael Conant in the early 1800s. The site grew rapidly in the 1920s, as newly wealthy Black workers could buy land there without restrictions. It was in its prime in the 1940s and ‘50s, and homes from that era are still popular in the neighborhood today. Bus stops are easily accessible and found at regular intervals around the area, and if anyone wants to travel, the Detroit Metropolitan Airport is less than 25 miles away. Further, the Conant Gardens Neighborhood Development Corporation was formed to help revitalize the area through strategic partnerships, affordable housing and more integrated green spaces. “It’s a very small area with a high school, fire station and several churches.
