Detroit Architects: Schowalter Bros

Detroit Architects: Schowalter Bros

1 min read

Founded by architects Frank M. Schowalter and Edward R. Schowalter, Schowalter Brothers was a residential development firm that catered to Detroit’s upper-middle-class in the 1920s-1940s, a period closely associated with the growth of some of the city’s most affluent districts during its peak expansion years.

As both designers and developers, Schowalter Brothers focused on homes that exuded an air of prestige due to their quality craftsmanship and proportion rather than flamboyance.

Their work spanned Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival styles, two of the core aesthetic languages that define districts like Sherwood Forest, where you can find two of their living commissions, 19575 Stratford Road and 19585 Stratford Road.

Both these neighboring properties contributed to Sherwood Forest’s lasting identity as a neighborhood centered on architectural sophistication and perfectly demonstrate Schowalter Brothers’ signature design approach:

  • Stately brick and stone masonry
  • Steep pitched roofs
  • Intricate revival detailing
  • Spacious interiors perfect for comfort and entertaining

Together, the Schowalter Brothers’ body of work helped reinforce the reputation of Detroit’s most exclusive enclaves — a reputation that has carried into today thanks to the wide variety of talented architects who understood how to create neighborhoods that would withstand the test of time.
