Amy Carrier Fanta: The Director Restoring Detroit Through Courage and Faith

Introduction

Amy Carrier Fanta is the Executive Director of Camp Restore Detroit, a faith-based crime prevention organization with a focus on revitalization and community restoration in Detroit’s most blighted east side neighborhoods.

Prior to taking over as director of Camp Restore, Fanta was already deeply involved in Lutheran ministry and mission work, speaking publicly about her belief that Faith-based service must stretch beyond charity and focus on restoration.

As for Camp Restore, the organization is based out of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church on Seymour Street, which acts as a hub for volunteers that restore abandoned homes, connecting them with long-term residents and helping foster positive relationships.

Fanta’s approach is centered on locality, and she is dedicated to ensuring every cleanup, home repair, and youth program she oversees supports the vision of long-time residents in the G7 zone of Detroit’s 9th Precinct—an area known for its struggles with disinvestment and blight.

Under Fanta’s direction, Camp Restore has hosted hundreds of volunteers from schools, churches, and universities, who pay a nominal fee for lodging and meals and stay in renovated classrooms within the church while doing their work.

The bulk of their volunteer hours go toward supporting resident-led initiatives such as creating and running community gardens, boarding up dangerous looking homes, and directly supporting local causes in addition to Camp Restore’s own internal infrastructure and programs.

Fanta has also been a major force behind expanding Camp Restore’s programming into technology, youth, mentorship, and education.

With a work ethic that is collaborative, dignified, and entirely grassroots, Amy Carrier Fanta has positioned Camp Restore Detroit as more than just another CVI organization.

It’s a model for relational restoration as a whole, with every act of renewal bringing Detroit and its people one step closer to healing.
