Detroit festivals and events by season
Winter
The Detroit Auto Show brings new vehicles and industry events to Huntington Place on the riverfront each January. For a free winter night out, Noel Night in Midtown has been a holiday tradition for more than 50 years.
Spring
Flower Day fills Eastern Market with growers and gardeners on a Sunday in May. Memorial Day weekend brings Movement, the electronic music festival at Hart Plaza that celebrates Detroit as the home of techno.
Summer
The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix races through downtown streets. The Parade Company also stages the Ford Fireworks over the Detroit River; check its site for the date. Summer is also street festival season across Detroit neighborhoods and suburbs.
Fall
Labor Day weekend is the Detroit Jazz Festival downtown, which calls itself the world's largest free jazz festival, and Arts, Beats and Eats in Royal Oak. October brings the Free Press Marathon, and Thanksgiving morning belongs to America's Thanksgiving Parade, which marks its 100th parade in 2026. It travels down Woodward from Kirby Street to Congress Street, and the Turkey Trot runs earlier that morning.
How to do a big Detroit event right
- Skip the parking hunt. The QLINE and People Mover are free, and SMART and DDOT buses serve downtown. See our Detroit public transportation guide.

- Expect road closures. The Grand Prix, marathon and parade close major downtown streets. Check the event site for the closure map.
