01
Verify the event before making travel plans
Open the organizer's current event page and confirm the date, time, address or virtual platform, registration requirement, intended audience, and participating employers. Check again shortly before leaving because weather, capacity, employer participation, and venue instructions can change after an event is first announced.
Identify whether the event is a broad fair, a single-employer recruitment, a workshop, an information session, or an interview day. Those formats require different preparation. A general community event may provide introductions without accepting applications, while a recruitment event may require an employer-specific application.
02
Prepare for the actual employers and roles
Review the employer's official site, open roles, work locations, schedules, qualifications, and application instructions. Prepare a concise explanation of relevant skills and experience. Bring or upload only the materials requested by the organizer, and tailor a resume rather than distributing sensitive personal records to every table.
Write questions that cannot be answered by the job title alone, such as daily duties, schedule, training, worksite, hiring steps, and timeline. Do not provide banking details, account passwords, or identity documents merely to receive information. Verify any follow-up message through the employer's published channel.
03
Use workshops and career centers as separate resources
Detroit at Work publishes current job fairs, events, workshops, and career-center information. Workshops may cover resumes, interviews, computer skills, assessments, or career advisement. Review each description because orientation, appointment, registration, capacity, or document rules can vary by activity.
A workshop completion, recruiter conversation, or resume handoff does not equal an application, interview, offer, or hire. Ask what the next action is and who owns it. If an employer directs candidates to an online application, complete it through the verified employer or official job system.
04
Record follow-up and protect against scams
After the event, note the employer, role, representative, application method, date, and promised follow-up. Send a professional message when invited and keep the application record current. Do not pay to secure an interview or send funds, gift cards, cryptocurrency, or returned check proceeds to a supposed employer.
Use the official sources below for live schedules. Rebuild Detroit does not verify every attending employer, reserve seats, submit registrations, collect resumes, or guarantee interviews or jobs. Report event-specific problems to the organizer and suspected fraud to the relevant platform or authority.
