Test before you tear out
Older Metro Detroit homes can hold asbestos in pipe wrap, floor tile, ceilings, plaster and siding, and lead in paint on pre-1978 windows and trim. Get asbestos testing or a lead inspection before remodeling, and use radon testing to learn whether mitigation is needed at all.
Michigan licensing and certification
Companies removing friable asbestos on someone else's property need a Michigan asbestos abatement contractor license, and workers, supervisors and inspectors need state accreditation, both through the MIOSHA Asbestos Program. Lead abatement firms, workers and supervisors are certified by MDHHS. EGLE says radon contractors are not state licensed and points to NRPP or NRSB certification. MDHHS notes there are no Michigan laws specific to mold in homes, so check training, insurance and references.
