Paid residential work above a threshold set by state law requires a Residential Builder or Maintenance & Alteration Contractor license from LARA, and Excavation is a listed M&A trade. Michigan law requires notice to MISS DIG 811 at least three business days before digging. Earth changes of one acre or more, or within 500 feet of a lake or stream, generally need a Part 91 soil erosion permit from the county or municipal enforcing agency. Septic permits come from the local health department.
Depth and dimensions, how trenches are protected (MIOSHA Part 9 requires a protective system in trenches deeper than 5 feet), whether spoils are hauled or reused, backfill material and compaction, and restoration of lawns and drives.
