Solar is electrical work, so Michigan requires an electrical permit pulled by a licensed electrical contractor (or an owner working on the single-family home they live in). Roof and ground mounts can also need a building permit. The utility must approve the interconnection under MPSC rules before the system is energized, and exported power is credited under the MPSC distributed generation program.
