Michigan licenses alarm businesses under the Private Security Business and Security Alarm Act: look for a Security Alarm Contractor agency license from LARA and check it on MiCLEAR. State law does not require an electrical license to install security alarm systems, or for telecommunications and information systems work by companies primarily in that industry, and it limits local electrical ordinances from requiring permits for security alarms and home or business monitoring systems. Fire alarm work is excluded, and any new line-voltage outlet or circuit needs a licensed electrician and usually an electrical permit.
