Michigan does not list locksmiths among the occupations LARA licenses, so there is no state locksmith license to look up. Check the company in the LARA business entity search (a sole proprietor may file an assumed name with the county clerk instead), ask for proof of insurance and photo ID, and get a written estimate. The FTC advises researching a locksmith before an emergency, since some that advertise locally are not local. Complaints can go to the Michigan Department of Attorney General.
Compare the total estimate, the hardware grade, whether keys will match, warranty terms, and whether the locksmith asks for proof of residence before a lockout.
