Paid residential work above a threshold set by state law requires a LARA Residential Builder or Maintenance & Alteration Contractor license. The Michigan Residential Code exempts from a building permit only small, low, freestanding decks that are not attached to or near the house and do not serve a door; most other decks need a permit. Fences up to 7 feet are exempt from a building permit under the state code but are regulated by local zoning, and some cities, including Detroit, issue fence permits. Michigan law requires notice to MISS DIG 811 at least three business days before digging post or footing holes.
