Permits and licensing in Michigan
New circuits need an electrical permit, sink and gas changes need plumbing or mechanical permits, and wall removal needs a building permit. In Detroit, permits and inspections go through BSEED; elsewhere, the city or township building department (or the county or state, where they enforce) issues them.
Michigan licenses residential builders and maintenance and alteration contractors through LARA under Article 24 of the Occupational Code. A license is required for paid residential work above a threshold set by state law. Paid work that disturbs paint in a pre-1978 home must follow EPA lead-safe rules.
