Removing a load-bearing wall is the classic way to open up a kitchen, dining and living area. The wall is carrying weight from the floor or roof above, so taking it out means transferring that load to a new beam, posts and, often, new footings in the basement.
The work is structural. A contractor sets temporary shoring walls on both sides, removes the wall, installs a beam sized by an engineer or a code table, and carries the load all the way down to the foundation. In older Metro Detroit homes, the path down is often not what it looks like, and posts may land on a basement floor that was never designed as a footing.
Walls also hide wiring, plumbing vents, drains and ductwork that must be rerouted by licensed trades. Flush beams hidden in the ceiling look cleaner but take more work than dropped beams.

Permits and licensing in Michigan
Removing a load-bearing wall is a structural change and requires a building permit. LARA notes that routine maintenance does not need a permit, but structural work such as beam changes does. In Detroit, permits and inspections go through BSEED; elsewhere, the city or township building department (or the county or state, where they enforce) issues them.
Michigan licenses residential builders and maintenance and alteration contractors through LARA under Article 24 of the Occupational Code. A license is required for paid residential work above a threshold set by state law. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work is done by separately licensed contractors under their own permits.
