Permits and disposal rules

A container parked on your own driveway or yard usually does not need a right-of-way permit, but some cities, townships and HOAs set their own rules, so check before delivery. Placing it in the street, on the berm or elsewhere in the public right-of-way needs a permit. In Detroit, the City's residential solid waste guidelines say roll-off containers must be placed on your property and that street or berm placement requires a DPW permit; dumpster permits are among the right-of-way permits handled by the DPW City Engineering Division. Elsewhere, ask your city or township and confirm who pulls the permit.
