Michigan requires asbestos inspectors to hold state asbestos inspector accreditation, which includes training and work experience requirements. The MIOSHA Asbestos Program publishes a search of accredited individuals, so ask for the inspector's accreditation and check it.
Under the federal asbestos NESHAP, enforced in Michigan by EGLE, commercial buildings and multi-home projects must be inspected before renovation or demolition, and a visual look alone generally is not enough. A privately owned home with four or fewer units is generally exempt, but demolition permits can carry their own local requirements, so check with BSEED in Detroit or your local building department.
