Permits and licensing in Michigan

A new foundation or addition needs a building permit from the local building department (BSEED in Detroit), usually pulled by the builder before the dig. Michigan law requires notice to MISS DIG 811 at least three business days before excavating. Earth changes of one acre or more, or within 500 feet of a lake or stream, generally need a Part 91 soil erosion permit from the county or municipal enforcing agency.
