In Detroit, BSEED issues the wrecking permit and licenses wrecking contractors, and DWSD must issue a Demolition Water Clearance before BSEED will issue the permit. The federal asbestos rules require a thorough inspection and an online notice to EGLE's Air Quality Division at least ten working days before demolition. Asbestos abatement must be performed by a contractor licensed through the MIOSHA Asbestos Program, which also receives abatement project notifications.
