Cockroach Extermination in Detroit: what to expect
Cockroach extermination in Detroit is mostly about German cockroaches, the small tan roaches that live in kitchens and bathrooms and spread through shared walls in apartments and duplexes. Larger American and Oriental cockroaches also show up in damp basements and floor drains in older homes across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
German cockroaches breed fast and can resist some older sprays, so professional plans rely on gel baits, insect growth regulators and careful placement in cracks, hinges and appliance voids. Sanitation and sealing matter as much as product: grease, crumbs, cardboard and leaks keep a population going. Expect more than one visit.
In multi-unit buildings, treating only one apartment rarely works. See commercial pest control for landlords, or compare pest control near you.
What a proper job includes
- Inspection with monitors or traps to find harborage
- Species identification (German, American or Oriental)
- Gel bait and insect growth regulator placement
- Crack and crevice treatment in kitchens and baths
- Sanitation and sealing recommendations in writing
- Follow-up visits to re-check monitors and re-bait
- Notes on adjoining units when in a shared building
What drives the price
- Roach species and size of the infestation
- Number of rooms or units to treat
- Clutter and sanitation conditions
- Number of follow-up visits needed
- Whether shared walls or adjoining units are included
- One-time cleanout vs an ongoing service plan

Licensing and permits in Michigan
In Michigan, a company that applies pesticides for hire must hold a Pesticide Application Business License from MDARD (the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development), and every employee who applies pesticides must be a certified commercial applicator or a registered applicator supervised by one. For work inside homes the certification category is 7A General Pest Management. At the time of treatment the applicator must leave written information that includes their name, the target pest and the active ingredients used.
Treatment does not need a building permit. You can check the business on MDARD's Find a Firm search and the technician on MDARD's list of certified pesticide applicators.
