Credentials and rebates in Michigan
DTE Energy's Home Energy Assessment is for eligible DTE customers with gas-heated homes and uses participating contractors who run blower door tests, equipment testing and thermal imaging. Consumers Energy offers a free Home Energy Analysis visit with a report and some energy-saving products installed. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), which covered some home energy audits, ended for expenditures or property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Programs change, so confirm eligibility with your utility.
Michigan does not issue a state license specific to energy auditing, so ask about national credentials. The state's Home Energy Rebates program accepts auditors with credentials such as BPI Building Analyst, BPI Energy Auditor or a RESNET HERS Rater certification. Any insulation, HVAC or electrical work that follows is done by contractors holding the LARA license for that trade, with permits where required.
