Credentials and rebates in Michigan

Programs change often. DTE Energy's Home Energy Assessment has contractors submit rebate forms for eligible customers, and Consumers Energy's Home Solutions program pays rebates through participating contractors. MiHER has paused new income-qualified applications in some districts, including Detroit and Warren. Always confirm current offers and eligibility with the utility or program before starting work. The federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit (25C), which covered some home energy audits, ended for expenditures or property placed in service after December 31, 2025.

Michigan does not issue a state license specific to energy auditing, so ask about national credentials. The state's Home Energy Rebates program accepts auditors with credentials such as BPI Building Analyst, BPI Energy Auditor or a RESNET HERS Rater certification. Any insulation, HVAC or electrical work that follows is done by contractors holding the LARA license for that trade, with permits where required.
