Permits and safety rules in Michigan

Michigan law requires notice to MISS DIG 811 at least three business days before any digging, and hand digging near marked lines. MISS DIG does not locate private lines, so point out sprinklers, septic lines and buried power to your yard. Trenches deeper than 5 feet need a protective system under MIOSHA Part 9. The excavation work itself may need a building, plumbing or right-of-way permit depending on the project; confirm who pulls it with the local building department (BSEED in Detroit).
