Permits and safety rules in Michigan

Whoever digs must notify MISS DIG 811 at least three business days before excavating, so agree in writing who places the ticket. Trenches deeper than 5 feet need a protective system under MIOSHA Part 9. Crane work requires a certified operator under MIOSHA Part 10, and forklift operators need an employer issued permit under Part 21. Project permits, such as building, soil erosion or right-of-way permits, usually belong to the owner or general contractor; confirm with the local building department (BSEED in Detroit).
