Permits and licensing in Michigan

Michigan's residential code exempts cabinets, counter tops and similar finish work from a building permit. A kitchen or bath remodel that moves plumbing, adds circuits or removes a wall is a different matter. Plumbing, electrical or gas changes need their own permits and licensed trades, and work that cuts or removes structural framing is not an ordinary repair, so confirm with the local building department (BSEED in Detroit).

Paid residential work above a threshold set by state law requires a LARA license: a Maintenance & Alteration Contractor license that lists Carpentry, or a Residential Builder license.
