Define the work before requesting quotes
Tell roofers the roof type (shingle, flat, metal), its approximate age, how many layers you think are on it, and where you see leaks or damage. For storm or hail damage, say whether you have already opened an insurance claim. The same facts in every request make quotes comparable.
Michigan licensing and permits
Michigan licenses home roofers through LARA as a Residential Builder or a Maintenance and Alteration Contractor, and roofing and gutters are both trade categories on the Maintenance and Alteration license. A license is required when the contract price is above a threshold set by state law. The Michigan Residential Code does not exempt re-roofing from a building permit, so a new roof generally needs one from the local building department.
What to compare
Ask each roofer whether the quote is a full tear-off or an overlay, how damaged decking is priced, what underlayment and ice barrier go down, how the attic will be ventilated, and what the workmanship warranty covers. Never pay in full up front, and get every promise in a written contract.
