The story

Of everything Mueller sculpted here, Hurlbut Memorial Gate leads the list, a monument in Detroit's Waterworks Park, finished in 1894 and listed on the National Register in 1975.

The record opens in 1894 with Hurlbut Memorial Gate, in Detroit's Gilded Age, when stove works, shipyards and railroads made the city's first fortunes, and closes in 1927 with the Belle Isle Elephant House. The region has lost the Belle Isle Elephant House, demolished in 1973 from Mueller's record. Hurlbut Memorial Gate and 1307 Broadway still stand.

In Detroit, Mueller's work stands in Belle Isle and Waterworks Park. Herman A. Brede is credited beside Mueller on Hurlbut Memorial Gate. To see Mueller's work in person, start with Hurlbut Memorial Gate at Cadillac Boulevard and East Jefferson Avenue.
