By neighborhood

Detroit restaurants by neighborhood

Downtown and Greektown

Downtown is the easiest place to start: restaurants cluster around Campus Martius, the stadiums and the riverfront, and the free People Mover loops past most of them. Greektown is a compact dining and nightlife district on Monroe Street, busy before and after games and concerts. Read more about living downtown.

Corktown

Corktown, the city's oldest neighborhood, mixes old bars with newer restaurants along Michigan Avenue near the restored Michigan Central station. Slows Bar BQ has been a Corktown anchor for years and is a good first stop for smoked meats.

Eastern Market

Eastern Market runs a Saturday market year round, with Sunday and Tuesday markets in summer. Come hungry: the sheds are ringed by butchers, bakeries, cafes and restaurants, including Supino Pizzeria on Russell Street.

Mexicantown and Southwest Detroit

Bagley Street and West Vernor Highway in Mexicantown and greater Southwest Detroit are lined with taquerias, panaderias and sit-down Mexican restaurants.

Midtown and New Center

Midtown sits between Wayne State and the museums of the Cultural Center, so it is full of coffee shops, casual lunch spots and pre-show dinners. The QLINE streetcar runs up Woodward to New Center.

Hamtramck, Banglatown and Dearborn

Hamtramck is known for Polish bakeries and restaurants alongside Bangladeshi and Yemeni spots; the Campau/Banglatown area across the Detroit border continues that mix. West of the city, Dearborn is the region's best-known destination for Middle Eastern food and bakeries.

Local tips

How to eat like a Detroiter

  • Check hours before you go. Many neighborhood restaurants close early or take a day off midweek, and hours change with the season.
  • Game days change everything. Downtown, Greektown and Corktown fill up before Tigers, Lions, Red Wings and Pistons games. See the Detroit events calendar.
  • Ride instead of parking. The QLINE on Woodward and the People Mover downtown are both free. Details on our Detroit transportation guide.
  • Hit the market early. Eastern Market is busiest late Saturday morning; go early for the best selection.
  • Bring the kids. Coney islands, pizza and market stalls are casual and family friendly. More ideas on our family guide.
