The story

H. Van Buren Magonigle was an American architect. Magonigle's mark on Metro Detroit is the Stevens T. Mason Monument, a monument in Detroit, finished in 1908. Built in the years Detroit became the Motor City and built like it meant to stay on top, it has stood for 118 years.

Outside Metro Detroit, Magonigle's work includes Sheldon Court (Cornell) in Ithaca, New York (1902), the McKinley National Memorial in Canton, Ohio (1907), and the USS Maine National Monument in New York City, New York (1913). On the Stevens T. Mason Monument, Magonigle shares credit with Albert Weinert. Go see the Stevens T. Mason Monument at 1317 Griswold St for yourself.

Harold Van Buren Magonigle (1867 to 1935) was an American architect, artist, and author best known for his memorials. He achieved his greatest success as a designer of monuments, but his artistic practices included sculpture, painting, writing, and graphic design.
