The story

The Hungarian-American architect Marcel Breuer was born in Pécs, Austria-Hungary in 1902 and died in 1981. Metro Detroit knows Breuer by the Grosse Pointe Central Library, a library in Grosse Pointe Farms, finished in 1953 and listed on the National Register in 2021. Built as the region worked through hard times and then boomed after the war, it has stood for 73 years.

Far from Woodward Avenue, Breuer designed Saint John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota (1856), the Ariston Club in General Pueyrredón Partido, Argentina (1948), and the Seymour Krieger House in Maryland (1958). Breuer's honors include the AIA Gold Medal in 1968. The Grosse Pointe Central Library still stands at 10 Kercheval Ave, and the best way to know Breuer is to stand in front of it.

Marcel Lajos Breuer ( BROY-ur; May 21, 1902, July 1, 1981) was a Hungarian-American modernist architect and furniture designer. He moved to the United States in 1937 and became a naturalized American citizen in 1944.
